Positive Youth Development - Developmental Assets

External Developmental Assets that help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible and that are incorporated into BFDI Positive Youth Development programming include:

Support - The support of family, other nonparent adults, neighbors and their school environment is encouraged through collaborative partnerships with others in the community.

Empowerment - The value of youth to their community based upon relationships with adults in the community is emphasized. They are given useful roles, encouraged to provide community service and receive nurturing that allows them to feel safe at home, school and in their neighborhood.

Boundaries & Expectations - Rules, consequences and monitoring of behavior is provided through various activities such as individual and team competitions, expectations of peers, parents and other adults.

Constructive Use of Time - The involvement of youth in creative activities and programs that involve sports, clubs or organizations, their religious institutions or simply time at home with family is encouraged.

Commitment to Learning - Youth are motivated to do well in school, engage in learning and care about one's school.

Positive Values - Youth are encouraged to demonstrate caring, integrity, honesty, responsibility, restraint and places high value on equality and social justice.

Social Competencies - Youth are encouraged to develop and demonstrate planning and decision making skills, interpersonal skills, cultural competence, resistance skills and conflict resolution skills.

Positive Identity - Youth are encouraged to be optimistic about their personal future, have a sense of purpose, high self-esteem and feel they have control over the things that happen to them.

Since 2003, over 10,000 youth have been engaged in Black Family Development, Inc. Positive Youth Development Programs.
