Black Family Development, Inc. provides services to support and assist self sufficient, healthy, and unified family development.

Support for Families Facing Homelessness

Black Family Development, Inc. assists families dealing with homelessness. Specific services include:

  • Establish immediate shelter for families
  • Counseling on long term needs for shelter
  • Home Maintenance
  • Crisis intervention
  • Individual counseling
  • Relocation services
  • Housing search assistance
  • Advocacy
  • Tenant, Landlord negotiations
  • Utility Assistance

    Family and Domestic Violence Support

    A Best Practice Program – A model program of service delivery that, as substantiated by credible evidence, has shown some effectiveness in accomplishing desired outcomes.

    The safety and well being of children is the primary goal of Black Family Development, Inc.’s Famlies First Program of Michigan. Family First Counselors work with families to avoid out of home placement through the provision of:

  • A 4-6 week intervention program
  • In home services with a focus on:
    • - Ensuring Safety of children at risk
      - Domestic violence
      - Child abuse or neglect

    Eligibility Criteria: Referrals are received from Interim House, First Step, or Michigan Department of Human Services. For more information on Families First of Michigan program, please contact 313-272-3500.

    Support for Families with Children

    A Best Practice Program – A model program of service delivery that, as substantiated by credible evidence, has shown some effectiveness in accomplishing desired outcomes.

    The safety of children through the prevention of child physical abuse and neglect and the promotion of family resiliency is the primary goal of Black Family Development, Inc.’s community based Family Connections program. Three and Six Month services include:

  • Counseling
  • Case management
  • Emergency assistance
  • Advocacy
  • Parenting Classes using Effective Black Parenting Model


  • Eligibility Criteria: Program participants must: (1) reside in Detroit or Highland Park, Michigan, (2) have a child between the ages of 5 and 11, and (3) have no current or open Child Protective Service case. For more information, please contact 313-758-0150 ext. 258.
